Southern Girl

Kudzu climbing to the sky
All haywire piled high
Sinking its teeth into my pecan pie
Running up and down the telephone lines
Here in this land of long lost dreams
Where the sun still shines so sweet
On a southern girl

Apparitions dark and hollow
Watching over empty field rows
Where cotton grew in endless arrows
Mixing dust with blood and sweat and sorrow
Here in this land of long lost dreams
Where the sun still shines so sweet
On a southern girl

Bridge:
As her rivers run their muddy selves/
Filling emptied wishing wells/
Carry away all her seeds to tell/
Her stories of the oldest days

When the future layed in big oak shade
And everything wrapped itself in total gray
And the flags waved and waved all day
Every night the bands would march and play
Here in this land of long lost dreams
Where the sun still shines so sweet
On a southern girl
